Chapter 54: Sidetunnels

As we go deeper into the tunnels there is more plant growth everywhere. Ricardo found out, after a little experimentation that the plants growing here, when burned, release toxic fumes. These plants were growing everywhere. The ground, wall, ceiling the whole tunnel is covered with these treacherous plants. The plants had overgrown, and deteriorated even the dwarven made “train” tracks that was running through the tunnels. It was not until we had already walked for quite some time, when Garritas noticed that one of the walls exactly was a side tunnel, but one completely overgrown with plant mass.
We cut away some of the plants and entered one, and found a far rougher path that led into the depths. Here we encountered our first dwarf. The poor fellow had been completely sucked dry, by what we didn’t know. But when we walked on and heard the sound of buzzing wings we quickly backed up a couple of paces. We would have stopped there. However Ricardo glanced something up high, a humungous diamond. The potential for that various resurrection that could take place with such a diamond was to much, so Ricardo decided to go for it. We short rested exchanging some magical equipment and he went up the walls.

Gravity has little grip on our monk, form the ground we could see him flip from wall to wall every now and then. I stood ready, spells on my lips in case the fool came tumbling down. But I shouldn’t have worried. While we all still stood standing looking up he came walking from the side, he must have taken a different route down, with the giant in his hands. And then he fell over. Damn fool had let himself get sucked dry, and not in a good way. Some kind of giant mosquito creatures had gotten him while he was working on getting the diamond loose.
As soon as we tried to get back into the main tunnel we discovered that the opening had completely overgrown again, and as soon as we tried to cut it, it came alive and attacked us!
This mimic-plant-simulacrum thing was quite a problem, as every weapon (and boot) we attacked it with got stuck in its planty ooze. Luckily Garritas got in a lucky shot, (crit for 90 damage!). In its remains we found some junk and 5 items worth 25gp each.

In the main corridor we find the body of our second dwarf, who to our great surprise, was still alive! He was paralyzed, probably drained of his capabilities. Redemption could identify him as the son of the chief of the Solve clan. He was wearing a locket with within it a piece of paper with writing in dwarvish.
The finding of this dwarf sparked some memory. When the other races had fled Dummasia, the dwarves went underground, fleeing into the underdark and building a giant magical empire, they were however chased from their empire by a giant black dragon, not something we would like to meet.

We finally arrived at the end of the tunnels into a big cavern, at least 500km in diameter, the cave had a big whole in the bottom disappearing into the darkness, in the middle of the hole stood a giant pillar, with on top of it the probably cause of all this greenery.

A big rift into spacetime was floating into the air, leaking magic from an elemental plane of chaos into our world. Underneath it stood a giant triffid.. person? A humanoid made out of vines and plants casting high level magic into the rift, keeping it open. Around it various smaller funganoid creatures stood dancing.
