The Founding of Westvale Farm

A New World

Westvale was a lucky village, things never seemed to go wrong there (Some of the elders silently believed it was since Romero was among their midst, and this was an extra reason for their fondness of the lad). Accidents never seemed to permanently disable or kill anyone. Fertility was high among the villagers. Newborns were always born healthy. Sicknesses did not take any lives.

All this added up to the lifespan of the villagers being higher than the surrounding  villages and towns. And though this was a great gift for all the loved ones, it did give one tiny problem. The village simply did not have enough space for all those lives.

When a messenger came through town with the relocation offer to Sorø, it sprang an idea in the mind of Romero’s father Jonathen. A few of the younger generation had been surfacing the idea of seeing more of the world. Why not take those who wish for adventure and start a new farm on this new continent? This way they could protect each other and create much needed room in the village, without truly breaking up the families and loved ones.

The Group

Jonathen leads the group, helped by his wife Sansey and their elderly widower friend Gregory. While Jonathen knows of all aspects of farming, his wife and Gregory are the experts. Sansey knows almost everything there is to know about tending to animals & the products they provide, while Gregory is an expert ironsmith, specialized in farming equipment and general tools.

Six of the younger generation have joined them for this adventure, one of them is Romero, the adopted Dragonborn son of Jonathen and Sansey. The children of Gregory have also joined, Gregsen & Amber. The 3 other young adults are Dariel, and the twins Misty & Dawn. Dawn is betrothed to Gregsen.

Some are proficient in carpentry and some in smithing of tools, nails, horseshoes and the like. They all have knowledge of farming, with small specializations among them.

Starting Goods Needed

Livestock needed to start the new farm:

• 4 cows and 1 bull
• 4 chickens and 1 rooster
• 4 pigs and 1 boar
• 2 horses and 1 stallion

Seeds and the like needed for cultivating the land:

• 3 kilos of corn
• 5 kilos of potatoes
• 3 kilos of grain

Everything needed for basic accommodations (after which they can make the rest locally):

• Hammers and nails
• Smithy equipment
• Carpentry equipment
• Axes
• Saws
• 7 wheels and 4 axes (The rest of the wagons they will create locally)

It took Jonathen a lot of persuasion to get all this equipment with them on the boat, since the boaters get paid for each person they move to the new land. Yet Jonathen was able to talk to those who pay the settlers for their risk. After he explained why they needed all these items and animals for starting a well-working farm, they made sure that the boaters got paid for shipping these as well.

The Plan for a Location

Ze zullen eerst een geschikte plek gaan zoeken voor de nieuwe boerderij. Op de volgende kenmerken wordt de locatie bepaald:

• Nabijheid tot een bos (handig om al het benodigde hout in de buurt te hebben, en vrijgekomen grond kan weer landbouwgrond worden). Alternatief is dat het vervoerd zal moeten worden van buitenaf en ergens anders gekapt moet worden.
• Nabijheid tot water (rivier of meer). Dit is noodzakelijk voor irrigatie en de grond vruchtbaar te houden. Er dient sowieso een put geslagen te worden, maar dat kan wel eens niet voldoende zijn.
• Vruchtbare grond, dat enigszins vlak is. Klei is erg vruchtbaar, maar moeilijker te bewerken. Losse grond met ruime vegetatie is ideaal. Het land zal verder bewerkt worden en vlakker gemaakt worden.
• Een natuurlijke grot is een groot voordeel. Deze wordt gebruikt om spullen veilig en in koelte op te slaan, en kan ook als ‘saferoom’ gebruikt worden. Als alternatief dient er een kelder gegraven te worden onder 1 van de schuren of huizen.

Als ze een goed stuk land hebben gevonden, zullen ze eerst een stevige schuur opzetten (deels ingraven als dat mogelijk is, natuurlijke grot als basis zou ook prachtig zijn) en van daaruit omheiningen opzetten voor de dieren en landerijen (deze worden in de loop van de tijd steeds verder uitgebreid. Afhankelijk van jaargetijde zullen ze het land gaan bewerken. Als laatste zullen ze de huizen opbouwen. Verdedigbaarheid is een pre (we zitten in wild land, dus verwachten soms problemen).
