Chapter 26: Battle preparations

And with a gasp I was drawn back to the land of the living. I had a moment to get used to the fact that I was breathing again before I was told what had been going while I was.. away.
Don’t get me wrong, it was loads better than being dead, but we were in for one hell of a shitstorm.

I wanted to process, to cry, to be close to people feel warmth again. But there was no time, we had to act. I started with summoning my dear Ara, and send her off on a recognizance mission. By the time she came back we had a deadline. 36 hours.

The party gathered together and we set to planning our defences. We had heard from the gnolls what kind of tribes were nearby, and we might be able to ask for help. After much deliberation it was decided as followed.

We would try to open the remaining cubes, resurrecting a god was deemed to great a opportunity to let pass by, and we had to get rid of glowing beacons pointing the undead horde towards Sorø. My idea of moving the cubes to create a diversion were shot down, due to time restrained.
Opening these cubes was getting easier and easier, it seems that Garitas is getting some sort of affinity with the cubes, I conject that this is magical in nature, but sure I cannot be. The first cube was opened with some difficulty, the second however was opened with a single click of Garitas, truly astonishing.

Inside we found more parts of the god, we let the pieces grow, and attached them to the part we already had. By now we have a complete torso, including a head. It is still inanimate, but we are getting close, the last 2 boxes should do the trick. I gathered 1 vial of the gods blood, in the hope that it might come in useful later, Ricardo.. drank some of it.. he is a reckless one. He got violently sick from it, but after recovering, his skin has seems to have gotten a lot tougher.

It was decided that we would try to bribe the kobolds to the east, we had to get there quick so Redemption and Grifferion had to go, and as we had no idea what kind of languages were spoken by the kobolds I, as the most literate party member, volunteered to go as well. We were able to fly there in 12 hours, upon arriving we discovered that there was a large cave next to the ruins we had seen sailing past this outcrop of land. Using magic to enhance my voice, I send out a message in every language I knew into the cave, asking for the kobolds, asking if we could hire them.

It was not for long until hordes of the little creatures became running out of the cave and surrounding me and Redemption, they were followed by a giant monster of a kobold, clearly their king. Luckily it turned out that the kobolds spoke both giant and draconic, and I was able to hire 270 kobolds and the kobold king himself for a measly 3000gp. The Kobolds apparently had a huge cave network running under Sorø, the tribe members over there would be sent to help us out.
An important note about the kobold, they are of dragon lineage. They create hordes of coins and gems, and they adore the larger more pure of the draconic kind, it seems wise to not mention to defeat of Gartholomeux at our hands.

Meanwhile Romero and Doemas went into the sea, asking help of the Gloebgloebs. Romero enabled the breathing of water, while Doemas was able to talk to the Gloebgloebs in giant.
They discovered that nearby Sorø a giant shell like structure was the home of this troglodyte offspring. They were brought before their leader to explain our problems, and to discuss the current conflict.

It turned out that the GloebGloebs blamed us for the theft of an important relic to them, a giant pearl that was stolen by one of our ships. What the gloebgloeb did not know was our ship had been stolen by the undead, and they were probably the likely culprit. They barely believed us, they promised to end the hostilities between our faction if we were able to get the pearl to them.. in 2 ?weeks/months?. As a sign of good faith they send a unit of 60 of their soldiers with us on land to protect us from the undead menace.

By the morning before the battle we had gathered everyone. The townspeople were increasing the walls with everything we had, oil was gathered to lay fire pits. And as soon as I mentioned traps to the kobolds their eyes began to shine. I have marked them on a map, in the unlikely event that we survive the night we should be able to dismantle them without getting hurt. The GloebGloebs scouted out prime ambush location, I feel sorry for the people who own the houses the gloebgloebs will chose, it will smell like decay in there for weeks.

I hope this will not be my last entry. I hope we will survive the night, but my hopes are not high. As such I have written the down the encryption key of my spellbook in common, as none of the locals seem to speak this. May it come to some use of a further generation
