How to play-by-post

So you want to play-by-post … well ok…

But how do you do it? Basically there are a couple of ground rules to get clear… Everything that is done in the in-character thread is … well … IN CHARACTER.

Write your posts first person or third person, what ever feels more comfortable.

Focus on writing from their own eyes and acting with just their own knowledge and no other player knowledge.

If you need to roll a dice for something you can do it with the dice-roller plugin – but it will be something like [TODO: Add example of how to dice roll here]. Once you post the number is fixed.

Use colours, boldness, italics, quotes, etc to separate what your character does from what he thinks to what he says out-loud from his inner monologue…

Here’s example of an in-character play-style:

[BEGIN POST by Fredrick’s Player]

Fredrick stands at the bar holding a pint-sized glass in his hands. Compulsively his hands polish the glass in a rhythmic manner – ever since he gave up his smoking habit he finds that he must keep his hands in constant motion. The rabble Sorø gather here at “THE” bar they have no where else to go.

Knowing a good thing when it hits him over the head, Fredrick gained “ownership” of this establishment during the troubles. No-one spoke up or gain-said his position. As long as the Triffid-juice keeps flowing everyone seems quite content to drink themselves into oblivion

Not like there’s anything else to do here…

[BEGIN POST by DM]

A sudden gust of wind brings the smell of sand and brine in from the ocean.

Hmmm… the saloon’s doors are still closed against the night-time chill though…

Everyone make a perception check

Fredrick rolls a Perception check [TODO: Add example of how to dice roll here]

[BEGIN POST by DM]

Fredrick your 15 is not enough to spot anything immediately out of the ordinary but..

Fredrick the hairs on the back of your neck start to stand up… you feel an almost electric hum in the air. It feels akin to the pressure in the air just after a lightning strike.

[BEGIN POST by Fredrick’s Player]

Fredrick’s long experience at busting heads is hard-wired to that innate lizard-part of his brain…

Gropping under the bar, his hand comes to rest on his trusty club “Night-night.”

Mmm… I always feel better when it is in my hand…
