Session 06 – Voyage of the Leaky Bucket

Session 6 tells us about the voyage of the last group of settlers to reach The Lost Continent.

The Story starts with the Dragonborn Ka’Tau travelling towards Westport on a cart, making a detour to Westvale to deliver an important package.

When the cart arrives at Westvale, he is surprised to see the calm way in which the local farmers react to his Dragonborn presence. When he finds out the reason for their relax posture towards him, his surprise turns to shock: the quiet little village is home to a lone Dragonborn who has been adopted by human parents! Likewise, Romero of Westvale is in for a shock of his own, when he finally meets the first Dragonborn he has ever seen.

Ka’Tau finds out that a group of villagers will travel the next day towards the same destination he is heading for: The Lost Continent, and he is invited to join the large feast that evening, in honor of those who dare the passage to the new lands.

During the feast the two Dragonborn have many questions for each other. Ka’Tau learns about Romero’s past and upbringing, while Romero gets his first glimpses of a life he never knew existed. In honor of their guest, Romero’s father once more tells his famous story about how he and his wife found Romero in a field behind their farm, and how they adopted him as their own son. Ka’Tau almost falls of his chairs when he learns Romero does not know anything about their breath-weapon ability, let alone use it, and he decides to show him and teach him outside. Even though Romero only manages to breath a whimper of a flame, he is mightily exited by this new-found ability!

To Port and Beyond

The next day the whole group of travelers head out as a caravan to the portcity of Westport, from which they will sail to Sorø. In Westport Ka’Tau notices a shady figure and leaves the rest of the group for a little while to seek him out, under the pretense that he needed to pick up some items. When he later rejoins the group, he is in a bit of a sour mood, but none question him about it.

At the docks the group meet the captain of The Leaky Bucket, and he explains to them the rules of passage. The group also meets the other passengers on the voyage <but this writer has forgotten who all, please help!>. After everything has been loaded on the ship (including a load of animals, tools and whatnot), the ship sails out to the open sea.

The voyage itself starts out unremarkable, and Ka’Tau uses this time to teach Romero about the Dragonborn and their culture.

Days before the ship is supposed to cross the dangerous reefs, storms pick up and the ship loses a few days on schedule. This worries the captain, since the timing must be correct to be able to get over the reef with the full moons overhead. Luckily the ship still reaches the reefs on time and passes over them without any problem.

Land

Days later the lookout yells “Land Ho!” and all the passengers on board look out over the water to see their new land grow on the horizon. After an uneventful night, they reach the shoreline and the captain redirects the ship to follow it to the port of Sorø. Hours later a ship appears behind the ship, which is gaining on The Leaky Bucket. The captain recognizes the ship as the first ship that went to the continent, and knows that something is not right. He orders the whole crew to be active and he tries to make port as fast as he can.

As the ship gets closer, weird figures are recognized on it: Skeletal Gnolls! Even worse is the huge balista mounted at the front of the ship, which could sink our ship! A dangerous cat and mouse game commences, in which The Leaky Bucket tries to outrun the enemy ship and reach the safety of the port of Sorø.

Ka’Tau uses his spell-powers to impede the other vessel, and focuses his efforts specifically on the undead captain who screams murder at all the living. He figures that a leaderless ship will not be able to keep up the pursuit. Romero starts blasting Fire Bolts at the other ship, much to the surprise of Ka’Tau who did not know Romero was a spellcaster until now!

The weather gets a bit freaky at times, sometimes slowing us down or washing loads of water over the ship. The enemy ship gets really close at a few times and the undead shoot arrows and the balista at our ship, killing a sailor and damaging the ship. Romero decides that his carpentry skills are more useful and goes below-deck to repair as much damage to the ship as he can.

It is a neck-on-neck race to the port, when the captain realizes there is no port at all! Apparently the port is completely destroyed, which makes the captain decide to head directly towards a nearby beach, to ground the ship on land. The decision pays off, and the ship grinds to a halt, more or less intact from it’s adventure. The enemy ship breaks off pursuit and heads back to the sea, with their undead captain shouting hell and death.

As the people on board start to unload the ship, people start spilling out of the nearby town, waving and trying to warn the new arrivals. And as the arrivals hurry to get everything on land, a giant monster starts moving towards the ship from the sea. It is as high as a mountain and <does someone have more description on this beast?>. As the monster reaches the beached ship, it lifts its hands high in the sky and lets them plummet into the ship with devastating power, breaking the ship in half, and shattering pieces of wood all over the area. After this the enormous sea creature turns around and disappears into the sea again.

The new arrivals are welcomed by the town of Sorø and are quickly brought up to speed on current affairs and the threats of the continent.
